Hypnotherapy
What is hypnosis?
The British Society of Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis states that "hypnosis usually involves the person experiencing a sense of deep relaxation with their attention narrowed down, and focused on appropriate suggestions made by the therapist." Hypnosis was used for pain relief during both World Wars and the British Medical Association recognised its value in the 1950's.
Hypnosis is a state like daydreaming and can occur naturally. Most people enter this state many times each day and it is like operating on autopilot; it is not like being asleep more like being very relaxed. In a trance you enter a state of enhanced awareness where the therapist's voice is the primary focus of your attention. It is actually the best state for learning and also for changing thinking and behaviour in an effective and quick way. The therapist can suggest positive lifestyle changes to the subconscious mind and then you make the changes yourself where the therapist facilitates the experience. Each person will experience something that is unique to them, however, common experiences are that it is very pleasant and relaxing.
Hypnotherapy
You remain in control throughout a hypnotherapy session. You will enter hypnosis only if you want to and leave it just as easily. You cannot be made to do anything you would not usually do as you can leave a trance state whenever you wish. You remain fully aware of your surroundings and can hear every word spoken by the therapist as you will be working in partnership. The change in your behaviour or addiction will happen because you want it to and you are motivated to make it happen. For any changes to occur you need to participate during the session and remember most of what is said.
Hypnotherapy is a state in which you can achieve much more than is possible otherwise as the unconscious mind is enabled to facilitate behaviour change and generally manage thoughts and emotions. By working in a trance state the mind's full capabilities are utilised and in this state change-work can be more effective.
